The reason for this is that the downward pressure the trailer has would be too much force for a fold-away kit to handle while installed in the above manor. Usually the flexible line is used if the trailer has a folding tongue. A solid metal line would not allow the tongue to fold. But on trailers that do not have a folding tongue you could use a regular metal line directly at the master cylinder like you said.

I am not sure what threaded bolts you are refering to on the Fulton hinge kit # FHDPB330301. There are 16 bolts, 8 for each end of the hinge to bolt it to the trailer tongue. Then on the outside there is one long bolt that joins the 2 halves of the hinge together and that is where the tongue will pivot. And on the opposite side there is a long pin that you would pull out so that you could swing the trailer tongue.

I would try using a carbide blade with your Sawzall for cutting your steel trailer tongue. If you don't already have one then you should be able to acquire one at your local home improvement store.
